Smartwool Trekking Crew Socks - Men’s Heavy Cushioned Wool Performance Sock
  • Made in USA

Experience durability at its peak with the Smartwool PhD Outdoor Light Crew Socks. These socks are built for performance in the highest degree, making them ready for any adventure on your list.

The Smartwool community is a collection of people who believe that time outside is valuable, restorative, and essential for everyone.

When Smartwool started making socks back in 1994, their founders simply wanted to be able to ski longer without getting cold toes.

That’s when they discovered the benefits of Merino wool as a performance fabric. It was soft (softer than any wool they had every felt), moisture-wicking, thermoregulating (warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s warm), sustainable, and odor-neutralizing- helping to keep feet dry, comfortable, and warm for longer than the synthetic socks they were wearing at the time. It worked so well, in fact, that Smartwool uses it in almost every single item they make.

Smartwool was the first outdoor company to make performance Merino wool ski socks- revolutionizing the category and forever changing the way outdoor enthusiasts viewed their feet.

Smartwool’s whole brand was built on the desire to be comfortable on outdoor adventures-we wanted to go farther and experience more. And that drive continues to fuel everything Smartwool does. From their Merino wool supply chain to the Smartwool advocacy program to how they design their socks and apparel, Smartwool exists to help you play, love, and laugh in the great outdoors as often as you would like.

These are the most confortable socks. However I bought these 'heavy crew' for a week long backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon thinking they'd be more cushiony when ive been using the lighter weight Smart Wool socks and had broken in my boots with the lighter socks. These will work well for people who are used to thicker socks or with my mountaineering boots. It was a mistake on my part to get the new heavy crews for the first time on a long trip ... but after my trip and a blister on my arch from the friction of a thicker sock than I'm used to, I been wearing these around like slipper socks or with my crocs. So comfy. I'm sticking with the lighter weight smart wool socks for my regular hiking boots. But it was my mistake so not sure it's fair to lower a point, especially when these socks are so comfortable for other uses I don't regret buying them now that my trip is over and im using them for other things other than with my regular hiking boots. Smart wool always makes high quality socks. Just need to choose the right kind for your specific use. As a backpacker/hiker/mountaineer I should have known better.

I've been wearing these hiking socks inside my boots for ages. They offer the cushioning, breathability, warmth and wicking of wool ragg, but without the annoying thickness and without the scratching. They're properly constructed with a heel and toe, too, so they are not like sticking your foot down a capped tube.

Once you properly break in a pair of properly-fitting boots wearing these socks, they will last forever - I am up to 20 years on a pair of Raichle alpine hiking boots I bought at REI in 1995 with two pair of these Smartwool socks. One of the pairs of socks is starting to wear out - few thousand miles on it - so I bought a replacement, hence this review!

    +Very warm
    +Cushy
+Tall enough for my ankle boots (Timberland boondocks)

I recently got a merino blend shirt and man that stuff works for cold. I thought more would be better and sure enough, these pure merino socks are very warm. But lacking a synthetic in the blend, they immediately started to fray after just a week and pilled after a wash. DO NOT MACHINE WASH. Also, buy something with a more durable blend. These also aren't very stretchy and are long in the toes. This made a weird deal where the socks stick to my boot insides and not to me, and then they chafe some when I move and I got a blister. Make sure you get the smallest size that will fit... and don't get pure merino for socks.

There are a lot of these luxury wool people, and some of them sell blends. I am going to try the Minus33 socks with a bit of polyester and spandex in them and report back...... sometime...

First off, these socks are great! Very comfortable, durable, and though pricey, I've not ever regretted buying them. I probably have 25 pairs of these things.
However, when I order them, it's always a bit of a grabbag as to what I'll actually receive. For instance, in this latest order I tried to get 5 large grey socks. What I got was 2 XL red/grey socks, 2 L (1 grey, 1 red/grey), and 1 M grey sock. WTF?
I literally go back to the same exact Amazon link to buy a set of them...and they always come as a random selection of color and sizes.

These Smartwool trekking socks are the most comfortable socks that I have ever owned. You can tell by the look and feel that they are pure quality. I experience some diabetic foot pain on the bottoms of my feet that has started to limit my hiking distances. While wearing these heavy cushioned wool socks I feel like I am walking on soft pillows. I bought them for hiking but now I find my self wearing them almost daily due to their comfort. They are warm in cold weather yet cool in summer weather. They are a little pricy but well worth every penny. I wish I had found Smartwool sooner. I highly recommend them and I will be purchasing more for myself.

I have owned Smartwool socks for many years. I didn't need replacements until recently. What I found was a "new" sewing style where they bunched extra fabric on top and at the end of the toe area. Totally unwearable for me. I am extremely disappointed.

Soft. Cushiony. It fits as I expected. I wore them throughout out recent vacation (several pairs) and they did help. My feet are not made for walking but these do help cushion and protect my self-inflicted walking wounds. I have bought several pairs now and will buy again.
April 2018: Just returned from a vacation in Paris. Wore these socks everyday with my Merrill hiking shoes. I lasted 5 days without blisters! This is an incredible miracle for me! I usually have blisters within 1 day, 2 at the tops. And, my blisters this time were minimal. I give credit to these heavy, cushioned socks. I just purchase 2 more pair. They are soft and heavy cushioned. Perfect for me.

I have worn SmartWool socks for a long time. I ordered a different color this time (Brown) and this pair is definitely too too too small. Why is there a difference in size when ordering the same size in a different color??????

These socks are top quality and provide great warmth and comfort when out hiking. Even when my boots failed and let in a tonne of water they kept everything warmer than expected. NO BLISTERS either which has been a great bonus.

If you have size UK8 feet, order the Medium size instead of the size chart suggested Large - if you do order large you will have to try your best to shrink them, which I have actually found quite difficult - Another bonus!

I have 4 pairs of these (2 heavy and 2 medium) and rotate them. No signs of wear on any. They are extremely comfortable, and do not shrink in the wash. My type of sock all round. Will ask for more for Christmas. Maybe they'll do some darker shades...

Socks arrived very quickly, feel great in walking boots except badly finished off inside so if the end of the yarn is in wrong place then rubbing occurs so extremely uncomfortable, in fact one pair so bad I won’t wear and haven’t tried all of them. If these socks were finished correctly they would be fantastic - ok for little dog walk but wouldn’t go miles - sad as they are great socks.

These socks are top quality and provide great warmth and comfort when out hiking. Even when my boots failed and let in a tonne of water they kept everything warmer than expected. NO BILSTERS either which has been a great bonus. Only con I have found is that I ordered the Large for my size 8 (42) feet going off the Smartwool website that states large as for 8-10.5 UK, and they are just too big for there not to be some bunch around the heel. I have subsequently ordered the same socks in medium and found them to be a perfect fit for my size.

I was expecting fluffy soft socks like Darn Tough make, but instead these socks have coarse loops of wool inside which make an abrasive texture on the sole of your foot at the start before they wear in. A couple of hours walking in these and I really noticed the extra soreness on my skin. Rather disappointed with these. I want to return them but don't feel I can, having properly worn them for a day.

I have bought Smartwool socks and boxer shorts for many years but the quality seems to be getting worse. These "Adult Trekking Heavy Crew" socks feel thin and although badged as Large (the size I normally buy) are far too big for my size 10 feet. The boxer shorts available now are also lighter than the ones I used to buy and don't last very long before wearing through. I will definitely be looking at other brands in the future.

I have a selection of this brand, and all are good !
I get, on average, 4 years wear out of a pair, and that’s all day mixed use.
    Highly recommended !

I purchased these as a gift for my Dad who assures me that they are great quality, comfortable and help prevent blisters and overly smelly feet!

These are excellent, soft and comfy socks, the only socks which keep my eczema skin happy. But they are grey, not navy. The light grey has thin stripes of navy in it. The overall colour is light bluish grey. I would give 5 stars, but deduct 3 stars for a misleading title which I relied on.

These socks do a great job protecting my feet from blisters and general soreness. They feel wonderfully soft when I put them on and have stayed that way through several washes. Not cheap but together with a decent pair of boots they have extended the distance I can comfortably walk by several miles.I highly recommend them.
I am a womens shoe size 6.5 and the mens medium is a perfect fit.

The material is good. I ordered a large size, and when it arrived it said it was large. It is, in fact, more like extra extra large. So large I couldn't get them into my trekking boots. To wear this enlarged size of socks is potentially dangerous.
I came down stairs without shoes on, and slid the last few steps, because of superfluous material. I can't return them because, I had worn them. I've had to bin them, which is a pity.

A really comfortable sock, which lasted for years and made walking in everything from a decent walking shoe to a heavy walking boot through to wellies a real pleasure.
Well cushioned in the right places, they maintain their comfort and shape for most of their effective life.
This is the third time, I think, that I have bought these socks, replacing them when they wear out.

The wool is fluffy and warm and a pleasure for the feet. However the socks are not shaped very well and don't stay on the feet firmly. I went one size down and the fit improved, but they still turn on my feet and come off with my boots when I take them off. For this price this lack of function is unacceptable for me.

These socks are comfortable, warm and blister-preventive/
Despite a lifetime's experience of walking / climbing, I can easily suffer blisters, especially if I haven't recently been doing lengthy walks First time out for a while I did over ten miles with boots that generally give me problems and - no problem.
Perhaps the best socks I have ever worn. Thank you
