smartwool

The Smartwool community is a collection of people who believe that time outside is valuable, restorative, and essential for everyone. When Smartwool started making socks back in 1994, their founders simply wanted to be able to ski longer without getting cold toes. That’s when they discovered the benefits of Merino wool as a performance fabric. It was soft (softer than any wool they had every felt), moisture-wicking, thermoregulating (warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s warm), sustainable, and odor-neutralizing- helping to keep feet dry, comfortable, and warm for longer than the synthetic socks they were wearing at the time. It worked so well, in fact, that Smartwool uses it in almost every single item they make.

Smartwool was the first outdoor company to make performance Merino wool ski socks- revolutionizing the category and forever changing the way outdoor enthusiasts viewed their feet.

Smartwool’s whole brand was built on the desire to be comfortable on outdoor adventures-we wanted to go farther and experience more. And that drive continues to fuel everything Smartwool does. From their Merino wool supply chain to the Smartwool advocacy program to how they design their socks and apparel, Smartwool exists to help you play, love, and laugh in the great outdoors as often as you would like.

I'll start by saying that I'm a very big fan of Smartwool. I own many of their products and before now I would not have thought it possible that I'd be giving a low review of a Smartwool item. Per the size chart I'm a size medium. Additionally, medium underwear fit me in other brands that I wear. In this case, these fit my waist, but there is vitually no room for my stuff. I decided to wear them for a day thinking they would probably stretch out. Very bad idea. I should have taken a backup pair of underpants with me. This turned into a painful experience as the chaffing and compression became increasingly irritating. I couldn't wait to get home and get these things off. I'm going to order a large to try because I REALLY wanted to like these underpants, but I'm expecting they will be too large in the waist. So far it seems that Smartwool really botched this one.
On a side note, the fabric feels amazing and the quality of construction seems to be exactly as great as you'd expect from Smartwool.

The previous version smart wool briefs were awesome, but I can't find them anymore. Yes they used to be expensive and I'm sure not many people bought them, but they were great. The pouch design on these doesn't work... they are basically women's underwear sold to men. No room for the testicles!

Unfortunately Smartwool changed the design of these briefs. Old design had various weaves that allowed stretch in all the right places while staying supportive and in place. I used the old design for hiking the Pacific Crest trail... running... etc. This new design was so terrible that I turned them into shop rags. These are terribly uncomfortable with essentially a flat panel squeeze. I tried wearing them to see if they would 'break in'. I even tried stretching/shaping them. No good. I had to switch brands to find something suitable. Still not as good as the old Smartwool design/weave, but better than these. If they ever bring back the old design... I'll buy a couple dozen pair.

Yeah, there’s no room for your junk. While it may look weird in the mirror, I don’t feel like they’re squeezing me. And the waist size runs a little large compared to other premium skivvies. But they’re sooooo breathable and comfortable that I don’t care. I wish they came in more colors and styles; I’d buy all of them.

The cloth is excellent, the fit is poor as many have said. No pocket shape in front. Just one piece of cloth wraps down and under between the legs.

Very soft and durable, but these have no room for the twig and berries. These almost seem like they are for women. Really wanted to like them but no bueno.

technically not a slight against this specific pair (likely an issue for me and briefs), but my package isn't contained as nicely compared to their boxer briefs variants.

The merino is okay but the waistband is terrible. The single pair that I got to test had an elastic failure before even the first washing. The waistband is sub-par and looses it's elasticity almost immediately. Very disappointing from Smartwool.
