I want to comment mainly on the size as I haven't hiked in these pants yet and there are plenty of other reviews. I wear 36 waist, 34 length, relaxed fit jean and I purchased the X-large/34 Royal Robbins. I purchased the X-large (38-40) because other reviewers said these run small and I have large thighs and calves from biking. So the waist on these pants is a smidgen loose but fine for me. I can tighten the belt up and don't feel any bunching of material. I think you could go with a 38 waist with these because of the elastic but I doubt a 40. While the pants are loose the rise is pretty normal for a 36 relaxed fit so if you have a big butt you might not like these, or maybe you can just wear them lower. They are very comfortable to sit in.
Yes, as shorts they are about 2" above the knee so the cargo pockets sit up higher than most regular cargo pants. I can put my hand in the regular pocket and my fingers almost reach the bottom of the cargo pocket. So if you pack you pockets you might be stacking stuff in one pocket over stuff in the other pocket. The back pockets are small, like normal dress pants. They will fit a bi-fold wallet and that's about it. One has a flap with double hook and loop and the other is open top with a single hook and loop in the center. The cargo pockets are also smaller than most and both have a flap with double hook and loop closures. One also has a zipper for extra security. On the left leg there is a cargo type pocket below the zipper and it has two things inside it with hook and loop for holding something but I have no idea what. There are no other small pockets for a knife or phone or whatever. The is a small mesh pocket on the inside, right rear, just below the waist. It is about 4"x3" and open across the top. I have no idea what this is for, maybe some wet wipes in a baggie if you have to do your thing in the woods.
I tried a couple of other brands of this type of pant and they ran very small or tight. Because of the looseness and comfort of the Royal Robbins I think they will be great for hiking. And I would wear them in most restaurants.
Update: I've worn these pants on two hikes, each over 10 miles. I am very happy with them and have no complaints. I had a back pack so only a few things in the pockets. Most likely I will never remove the lower pant legs while hiking because of deer ticks but after a very muddy hike I removed the lower legs for the drive home. This was very convenient and if you're hiking/camping you can remove the legs for rinsing or washing and still have shorts on.

I am not often genuinely impressed with a purchase, but these pants actually impressed me. I purchased them for a camping/canoeing trip. I wanted pants that would fit reasonably well and dry quickly. My excursions are usually kind of rustic, requiring me to wear the same clothes for a few days at a time. These pants stood up to the abuse, and they were absolutely quick dry. In fact, they are water resistant and stain resistant. I stood knee-deep in a lake, and as I walked out of the lake, the water just beaded off of the pants. I was 100% dry within minutes.

I saw that others complained about the fit. I didn't have that problem at all. I have a 32" waist and a 34" inseam. I ordered M waist and 34" inseam, and the pants fit perfectly.

2012 I've bought 3 or 4 of these excellent pants now which are way better then any other brands like REI. Nice deep pockets so your keys, cell phone, change, etc does not fall out every time you sit down like the REI brand. The biggest improvement with this pair from the last pair is they replaced the pants main plastic button with a metal snap button. I had lost the button from my last pair. Size can be a little tricky, they run small at least I think so.

I've bought lots of these pants since 2012, but the problem has always been the belts. The belt now wears out after a month and will not stayed up since the belt slips when pulled tight. Unless you like holding up your pants when ever you walk STAY AWAY. I now have to find a new brand...

    1) Perfect fit: I normally wear 32/30, and M/30 is the right size. I also tried similar pair of Columiba's pants at Sports Authority, but felt somewhat restricted when I raise my knee/thigh. Royal Robbins pants do not give me that feeling. It is probably because of the fullness of the pants and also the fact that it has "Gusseted crotch and leg openings" for more room and flexibility.

    2) The right color: A few reviewers said that they received more like brown color than Khaki, but I think what I received is the right color.

    3) Convertible shorts: It really doesn't bother me the fact that the shorts are rather short in today's trend. I personally has a plenty of shorts that are long, and don't have a problem of having rather short ones for trekking or hiking. I am sure some people want to look "right" when they do outdoor activities, but for me comfort comes first.

Since they are very comfortable and have a lot of pockets, I think I can use them for long international air travels as well. I highly recommend them.

I like these a LOT--so much so that I purchased another 4 pair. They are a bit too long for me, but that was expected--there isn't much that doesn't run long when you are 5 foot 2 inches tall. However, the button/elastic closure at the bottom helps fix that.

They seem to be wearing well and, best of all, seem to retard staining when food spills on them. Other pros include light weight, easily packable, convert easily to shorts, lots of pockets, durable (look like they are made of material resembling ripstop nylon), very reasonable price. What's not to like? (Well, I'm not sure how well they will work in winter here in Vermont, but there's plenty of room to wear thermal underwear underneath.

I guess the only con is that the bottom of the legs is complex--with both button/elastic loop adjustment and velcro-closeable slit, presumably to allow easy placement over boots. The problem with this is that it looks like shortening these would be very difficult.

Parfait

These pants were replaced by an "improved" version. Probably because the original design (the ones I bought from Amazon) never wear out. Get them while supply lasts!

Pas suffisamment ajusté,le tissus est flasque.La coupe est démodé.

Muy buena calidad a precio razonable. Comodos para cualquier actividad , sobre todo para actividades de campo o montañismo . Recomiendo
