This is a review and comparison of the Smartwool PhD Run Ultra Light Micro Socks and the Smartwool Unisex PhD Run Light Elite Micro Sock. This review will be under both products.
Main Idea Summary: These socks are AWESOME!! Get them!! So comfy and I will be buying more. They are both thinner than the regular Smartwool sock however the Light has more padding at the toes and heel than the Micro Light. If you run hot, as I do, I would recommend the Micro light for hot summers, although the Light is bearable for me on hot day, sort of. The Micro Light is the way to go if you are in hot climates and you run hot. If none of this bothers you than either one is fine. Both are comfortabale, make your feet feel like they are being hugged all day and can be worn multiple times before washing, just air them out and let them dry.
Issue: I love wool socks however thought they were only for winter. I run hot and sweat easily, if its 90 degrees Fahrenheit and I jog up some stairs I’m already perspiring. Recently I was informed that wool socks can be worn in the summer, in the dessert, and are far superior to anything.
Goal: To have wool socks in general for comfort, workouts, hiking, and moisture wicking. To have some extras for emergency in case of earthquake and there is a need to camp in the front yard if the house in uninhabitable.
Review: As I mentioned I run hot and sweat easily. So when it comes to clothes in the summer I generally stayed away from wool. However I learned that Smartwool makes a running sock so I thought I would try them out. Not know which one to get I bought one of each to test them out. I wore both for two days and worked out both days in them, on days that were about 88 degree Fahrenheit. Both worked great!! Wicked the moisture away, this is no joke. I was skating and on my canvas Vans was getting wet spots from the sock wicking away the moisture and then the Vans sucking it up. So both days I skated for about 45 minutes and then in the afternoon did 90 minutes of a crossfit workout. The Light version was a little bit warmer for me than the micro light but not enough where I couldn’t stand it. When I stopped I noticed it, that’s about it. Other than that they were great. I let the socks air dry and they could be used the next day, no smell. Great thing about wool and it’s anti-bacterial properties.
I will be buying more of both socks. I like the cushioning of the Light but do feel a very slight discomfort on hot days but not that much. I prefer the Micro lights.
Overall great sock and a wool man now. Getting rid of my cotton socks. I like the idea of having a few pair you cycle through and that can last for years if you take care of them. Next thing is to see if there is year round wool underwear.

These were my favorite socks. Forgot they were there, stayed in place, no blisters. Enjoyed them for runs ranging from 2 to 15.5 miles. Wore them about 5 times, then I wore/pierced the toe despite having short nails. Made me super me sad because these aren’t cheap. I’m an advocate for these socks, but I can’t bare to throw more money at them because 5 runs just isn’t enough to burn through a pair, not at these distances. I dig the company and could only bring myself to reducing them to 4 stars because it might have been a fluke. They were so good otherwise.

Update to 5 Stars: Company was super easy to deal with. Apparently I got some old stock, so they sent me a return label. Once I returned the socks, they sent me a new pair of the same, but upgraded version. Great socks.

Game changing and life altering buy. I tried People Socks Unisex Merino Wool Antimicrobial Crew Socks, 4 Pairs these socks to help with dryness around the house and keeping my feet dry out in the South Florida humidity and loved them. I decided to try these for working out, running, hiking etc.

COMFORT - They feel like your average no-show socks. They are light, snug, and don't move in my shoe. Post workout, my feet still felt relatively dry. They were MUCH more dry than they used to be after working out in cotton socks.

QUALITY - Wool socks are often sold by weight of the sock depending on the weather you will generally wear them in. Heavy - Ultra Light. These are ultra lights with 54% wool count. It is one the higher wool percentages in the ultra light weight I have seen. Having only a couple pair, I am wearing these a lot and they feel just as great today as they did when I first received them. No signs of deterioration.

COST - The price fluctuates on these socks fairly often but is often between $15 - $20 PER PAIR. If you are used to buying athletic socks by the 1/2 or complete dozen, you might get some sticker shock. There is no way around it, wool socks are expensive. If you end up loving them as much as I do, replacing your inventory with wool is going to cost quite a bit.

CARE - Wool socks require extra care to maintain. Washing them inside out and air or tumble drying. Is it a big deal? Absolutely not. At least not to me, but it is indeed additional from the norm.

If you know how great wool socks are and looking to get athletic socks for warm weather, these are a solid buy.

Nice socks! I was looking into wool socks because I read that they wick away moisture instead of absorbing it, which is mostly true! It won't be a cure-all for sweaty feet, but I wasn't expecting it to. I also really like the slight lip at the back of the sick. Honestly it's the main reason I'm giving these 5 stars. It's a feature that should be on all pairs of socks. It means not needing a shoe horn and not having your socks slide down into your shoe easily. Also the socks are super durable and will last a while.
Key points: nice design, durable, wick away moisture, and fit well

These socks were ordered for my husband, who has very wide, flat feet. We ordered the same sort of socks from another vendor who only had size Large in stock. They didn't work for my husband, way too short and tight. When I saw that you offered size Extra Large, I ordered right away. Unfortunately, only three pairs you sent were XL, the 4th pair was only size L. He wore them all, and said something about one pair being too tight. He wore them anyway, and after washing them in cool water and hanging them to dry, I noticed inside the little cuff that one pair was size Large.
Not happy about that!!!! Whoever filled the order should have been more careful. I have already thrown away the wrappers, so I cannot tell if they were mislabeled.
The socks are not inexpensive, now we're stuck with still more socks that don't fit my husband.

Yes, I've ticked the too small box, and still rated these as 5 star. That's because they're the most comfortable running socks for my feet that I've found. My shoe of choice is narrow, and most running socks are substantially padded, and squish my toes in badly. These are light, fairly thin, and don't rub at the seam across the toe for me, although I do wear then inside out, just in case.

I do find these small. In womens, run light, I take a large, as a UK size 7/8, but in the ultra light, I need the mens extra large, as the womens large in these are too small, and the back slips under my heel, especially after washing. With the extra large mens, they fit me perfectly and don't slide down.

I go through a lot of running socks, generally find them too big, too blistery or too hot, these however were perfect; racked up countless k’s in training and a 50km trail race without one blister.

Feet felt cool in them and being a minimalist type guy didn’t feel any disconnect from these to the trail.

If you want cushioning these aren’t the one but for my style they’re perfect.

Also wash extremely well; 15 or so washing machine trips later, still feel like new

Very lightweight. Functional but not looking like they will last for that many miles. In fact a hole after a few miles of bedding in and one race, utterly useless, and no way would Smartwool even reply to my requests to prevail of their supposed 100% guarantee.

Prrfect in every way. No locker-room stinks, excellent fit and arch/heel tension,
Excellent silicon grip at heel to prevent riding down, still fully effective after many washes.

Great product as all my smartwool products, fits as expected, strong and durable, important as I use them every week in the gym.

Great socks. Just wish I had bought more. They fit and wick well.

The best socks I've ever bought. Worth the extra money. Have recommended to friends and will buy again

    Great socks

    Comfortable and firm!
