I buy a pair of these shorts every spring. They last for years, I just like keeping a few in rotation. They've always been exactly the same, which allowed me to set up a perfect summer EDC kit.

Well, this year's offering is a major screwup. Cargo pockets are about 5mm narrower than past years models, so they no longer fit my backup gun in a "cargo specific" holster. Worse yet, a front left pocket is substantially smaller this year and won't fit my main gun's spare mag. Even a tiny front right pocket got smaller – I used to be able to put 3 fingers in, now it's down to 2. I keep chapstick and a tiny AAA flashlight there; in past years shorts these were riding horizontally, but this year they're awkwardly sitting upright.

Fit and finish are as impeccable as always, but the pockets… C'mon!

These 5.11 TacLite Shorts have become my favorite shorts. They're comfortable, lightweight, but strong. How strong? I was walking past a bureau in our dining room and brushed up against a drawer handle, the pleat on the TacLite pockets caught the edge of the drawer handle, and pulled it out from the drawer! Another example - I use these mostly for work shorts and got a little Liquid Nails glue on them. They went through the wash and came out still with the glue firmly attached, so I used a wire brush on the fabric to clean off the glue and the shorts look like new.

The pockets are a useful size and the interior front pockets are deep, especially compared with my other work shorts (Rothco BDUs). See the comparison photo. The elastic waistband is comfortable and ensures a good fit if you wear the shorts without a belt, but if you're going to weigh down the shorts by stuffing the pockets with your wallet, phone, pocket knife, keys, flashlight, tape measure, etc., you'll want to wear a belt as the elastic is not designed to keep a tight hold when the shorts are weighted down.

Overall, a great pair of shorts. I will be buying more!

Bought a pair of the pants last summer at a local sporting goods grand opening. Glad I tried them on, got the size larger than I normally wear. Hiking and climbing around in the Rockies I don't want them snug or tight in the thighs. Ordered these shorts the same, a size larger, perfect! The pockets are awesome and the material is heavy, not to coolest I've ever worn but these will wear like iron for years. Well worth the $$$...

Update - Got both pants and shorts out and measured the waist, these are size 36, with the elastic waist band at rest they measure 34, and will stretch to 38 easy. Lots of comments on the fit in these reviews, if you want them "taylor fit" order your normal size. If you want them relax fit order the next size larger, especially in the pants if you want to wear long johns and tuck in layers in the winter...

I've owned numerous pairs of the pants of this same variety and have loved them all. I decided that I loved them enough that I would give the shorts a try, but I didn't ever try them on prior to making the purchase, I assumed they were just a cut-off version of the pants, and I was almost right. The fit is identical to the pants, but I do have two gripes with them. 1. I am taller than average 6'4" and have a 36" inseam and the legs on these shorts are a bit too short for my taste and because of the shorter legs the cargo pockets are not as deep as on the pants and therefore are not able to securely hold larger items that fit well in the pants cargo pockets. 2. Being taller and having spent some much needed time at the gym losing some excess inches off of my waist I have trimmed down from a 40 inch waist to a 36 inch waist, the problem with these shorts as well as with the pants is that the getting them with the smaller waist means they also come with narrower legs and since I happen to have larger than average thighs I lose quit a bit of the mobility.

In closing, if you have an athletic build with muscular legs I would not recommend you buy these without trying them on first, unless you enjoy wearing clothing that fits like spandex without the flex. If you are an average sized person then these are probably the tactical shorts for you, but I still recommend that you try them on first.

Shorts are obviously made well. Material seems to be tough, and there is extra stitching problem areas. Water does roll right off rather easily, which is another good point. Shorts have plenty of deep, useful pockets, which is one of the main selling points for me. I do have one minor complaint, and that is these shorts run a little snug. Not only are they somewhat snug in the waistband, surprising considering there is elastic in the waist, but the shorts are also pretty snug through the thigh area. This limits my ease of movement quite a bit, cutting back on the practical use of these so-called "tactical" shorts. Most of the cargo shorts that I typically wear have more room in the thigh, making movement easier. All in all, I like these shorts, and I recommend them, but if you have thicker legs like I do, these won't be the most comfortable shorts.

The only 5.11 product I have not liked.
Arrived in a timely manner and the quality is as you'd expect from 5.11. But...

They are shorts...by that I mean they are like 1940's desert shorts and do not offer much gusset room and are higher than the knee like some schoolboy apparal ...I've worn them only a few times and have now put them away preferring cheaper cargo shorts that offer more space.
    Sorry...
    Not recommended.
    Hope this helps

These are a very good quality pair of shorts. They fit well and are made of high quality fabric with double stitching where it matters. The design is good too, plenty of pockets which are easy to reach yet keep their contents safe. They are comfortable to wear all day long.

Top kit as always from 511. Good fit (uk sized). All usual bits as per the trousers. As a big fan of 511 will expect them to last.

Nice fit, bit stiff. Good design on pockets. High quality Velcro closures

    As advertised. Very good quality.

    my best shorts

Very comfortable with lots of pocket space. The magazine pocket on the front is very handy for a phone.

Product was as described. Nice fit.

Excellent shorts, same quality as their trouser's!

good item just what i wanted

My one and only pair of shorts needed in the hot weather. I go shopping and to the beach in these. Tough construction and materiel. Pockets hold lots of items from keys, wallets, Victorinox, flashlight, Clif bar....

Great fit. Have the pants and needed new shorts. Have become my favourite shorts for work and play.

Buen producto, un poco pequeño de acuerdo a la talla

Excelente prenda buena calidad como todo 5.11
